lilly piri has been a serious inspiration to me these past 5 years or so since i stumbled on her blog in college. her work is fragile and alluring, strange and poetic. the pieces are composed on a heavy toothed paper with colored pencils. i love it when an artist uses an unexpected medium, especially one that is linked to childhood and is so lovely and ghostly.
i really hope to buy more of her work in the future.

there's a rumor that the young, weird and stunning vamp, evan rachel wood, has been tapped to play the queen of louisiana,  sophie- ann leclerq on the second season of true blood. if its true, i think its perfect. i can't wait for 'dead and gone' to be released...........i'm missing the supernatural in my life.

ruth ann borum

i've been meaning to post about ruth ann borum for awhile. i really dig her teeth and skull cupcake paintings, but its the creepy, wormy head-dressed women that i love the best.
check out her new show of amazing and bizzare work at loose leaf co. gallery.

brandi milne

brandi milne has a new show up at thinkspace gallery. her color palette is more earthy toned than usual and the animal/food/ghostly characters have a lovely nostalgic/creepy feel to them. the work as a whole reminds me of vintage advertising with camille rose garcia influence. some of the paintings were created on antique book covers, further illuminating the vintage feel of the show.  as always, i'm a big fan on conjoined twins and love the text in this piece. check out the rest of the show here.

kelly tunstall.

although i can't consider myself an avid collector, i do have a small collection of some pop surrealist gems. i've always wanted to add a piece by kelly tunstall and hope that i can soon in the next few years. she's showing over at doublepunch gallery this month and although i can't be there for the opening night tomorrow, i can't wait to see the work! for now, check out her work from last november with her equally talented hubby ferris plock from their limited addiction gallery show 'reconstruction'. her work always surprises me; her style has a few veins to it and the quirky yet playfully feminine women are always in the most lovely and interesting situations, whether alone or paired with one of ferris's monsters. i love it all and i know you will too!

a very lovely writer and collector of beauties in brooklyn recently purchased one of my newer pieces, 'the divine lorraine,' based on one of my favorite places here in philly, the haunted divine lorraine hotel. i've been working on many new pieces that i'll be listing over the next few weeks so keep an eye out. also, i'll be part of this years art star craft bazaar which is run by the amazing ladies over at art star gallery. the bazaar features around 120 artists who have individual booths selling their handmade wares. this craft show is juried and everything is really lovely and inspiring, it's worth saving some $$$ for even in these tough times. The show is May 30 and 31st! I'll post more about this soon, including a special secret.
thank you for the lovely picture D.V. ! xoxo

one of my very favorite artists, jennybird alcantara, has a lovely new show 'treacherous gardens' over at varnish fine art. i'm increasingly impressed by the amazing work jennybird produces for each show, the details and colors are always surprising. the hybrid female/animal creatures are steeped in myth and the duality between our dreams and nightmares. her paintings generally always feature these parallels and opposites in their structure; the central figures are in balanced, perfect symmetry. the various 'magical' objects around the figures may serve as omens or talismans, as the animals/creatures provide comfort and the symbolic nature of our instincts. for more haunting and macabre strolls into the subconscious landscapes of the wonderful jennybird, go here.
